McAfee helped launch Indianapolis-based affiliate Barstool Heartland with Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, but said on his own, independent podcast that he’s quitting and has not made plans for his next steps.
During the first edition of "The Pat McAfee Show 2.0," McAfee said dealing with the business side of the organization’s headquarters in New York City has become "very difficult." He added "financial decision are being made for me by people I have never met. Deals were getting made and pulled without my knowledge. The transparency of everything became obsolete and also very expensive." McAfee said he didn’t blame Portnoy or Barstool Chief Executive Officer Erika Nardini for the breakdown, but he called out "the business folks in the building" and that he didn’t "want to make money for those folks anymore."
In May of 2017, McAfee announced the location of the Barstool Heartland office on Meridian Street near the Central Library. That announcement said the space would house 30 interns. McAfee says the employees displaced by the decision will be paid two-months-worth of salary.
