Stewart’s Healthcare Associates in Kokomo plans to launch an adult Earn & Learn program this summer and a youth program this fall.
Chief Executive Officer Tony Stewart says his company’s programs are designed to provide on-the-job training for people while being paid, but also results in standing credit at Ivy Tech Community College. He says the programs are a win-win for his company and its future employees.
The youth program was developed with high school students in mind. They will be trained through a local career center and can complete the program in less than a year. The adult version of the program is connected to the local WorkOne office.
"While an Earn & Learn program is just one of many options for Work-Based Learning, it is a very important one," said Darrel Zeck, executive director of the Indiana Office of Work-Based Learning and Apprenticeship. "Stewart’s dedication to developing their programs and their willingness to take this first step is very much appreciated. Many more programs will follow, and several are already in the pipeline, but it takes a true visionary to be the first. Stewart’s commitment to work-based learning is significant as we embark on this new journey."
The office says work-based learning is a priority for Indiana because it provides individuals with the training and development path to meaningful careers and employers with educated and skilled employees.
