Steel production in the Great Lakes region saw a sharp decrease last week. Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report steel mills produced 641,000 tons, down 9.3 percent from the previous week.

The American Iron and Steel Institute says the Great Lakes region produced 707,000 tons of steel the previous week. Most of the steel produced in the region comes from Lake and Porter counties, according to the publication.

Nationally, steel production rose by 3,000 tons last week to 1.7 million tons. Year-to-date, U.S. steel mills have produced 71.2 million tons, 3.8 percent higher than the same period in 2016.
