Two key attractions, IKEA and Topgolf, will open Wednesday and Friday, respectively, and demolition continues on a nearby former neighborhood to make way for The Yard, a food and entertainment district. The projects represent nearly $100 million in combined investment and IKEA and Topgolf alone are expected to create some 750 jobs. During an interview with Inside INdiana Business Multimedia Journalist Mary-Rachel Redman, Mayor Scott Fadness said he thinks he has "the best political job in Indiana." He adds "it’s an extraordinary opportunity that challenges me everyday and it’s an exciting time to be part of Fishers."
Hamilton County had a 3.3 percent unemployment rate in August and Fadness says the new job opportunities are welcome. "IKEA had to turn and Topgolf is continuing to have success hiring," he said. "If we need to look at creative solutions to work force, we’ll do that. The good news is Fishers continues to be a growing community, it’s a young community where we have 22,000 kids under the age of 18, so there’s lots of high schoolers that could work." Fadness says the bricks-and-mortar retail sector, which has shrunken its labor force in recent years, could serve as a talent pool for these jobs.
