The Next Level Roads: Community Crossings Initiative involves matching funding for nearly 400 city, county and town projects. Applications for the second-year program rose by nearly 50 percent. At least half the available funding had to go to communities with a population of 50,000 or fewer.
Governor Eric Holcomb, who was joined by INDOT Commissioner Joe McGuinness for the announcement Wednesday in Jasper, said "superior local roads are a key factor in maintaining Indiana’s reputation as the Crossroads of America. I am encouraged that a record number of communities applied for and received funds this year, and I’m grateful to lawmakers for increasing the funding to sustain the community crossings initiative."
The program was approved by the General Assembly in 2016 as part of a renewed effort by legislators and elected officials to develop a long-term road funding strategy. Nearly 470 communities applied for funding in 2017. INDOT says next year’s pool of available matching funds will increase to an estimated $190 million.
