The organization has approved a total of $30 million in grants for the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, United Way Worldwide and United Way of Greater Houston.
The Red Cross and the Salvation Army will each receive $10 million as part of the effort. Lilly Endowment says that funding will be used at the discretion of each organization "for the most compelling relief and recovery needs arising from either or both hurricanes."
The United Way of Greater Houston is set to receive $5 million. That grand will be used to not only help meet the immediate needs of those affected by Hurricane Harvey, but to also implement long-term recovery plans.
United Way Worldwide will also receive $5 million, which will be dispersed to local United Way organizations to assist communities affected by Hurricane Irma. Lilly Endowment says there are 28 United Ways that will be eligible for support from this grant.
Lilly Endowment has approved more than $220 million in grants to support disaster relief efforts since 2001.
