INvets is a new, industry-driven initiative designed to offer more than a jobs board. For job seekers, it also includes career, educational and training advice. Employers who partner with the program will have access to the database of candidates and be able to provide information about their company and job openings.
In an interview with Inside INdiana Business, program leader and U.S. Army veteran Wes Wood says INvets targets those leaving the military who may not have easily transferable skills.
"When I transitioned out of the military, I went to job fairs, I went to nonprofits, I went to a transition program in the military. Nobody really knew what to do with me. If I went into an HR department and I tell them I was a sniper, they don’t have any sniper positions open on-staff and they don’t really know what to do," he said. "What a lot of those people don’t realize is all the soft skills, all the things I was just talking about, the teamwork, the drive, the motivation, all of those things make for a very highly-trainable person."
He says plans call for the program to not just pitch the employers or available positions, but also the communities where the companies are located. Wood says the program will even look to recruit on military bases, giving potential employees the "full picture," including detailing education or training levels needed for positions, pay potential and long-term prospects for a given career. "We’ve already got the job," Wood says, the program’s goal will be pitching it to veterans.
