The nonprofit says it is no longer moving to a building on Mass Ave in Indianapolis due to the discovery of "significant" structural issues with the building.
The museum says it began the process of making improvements to the building after signing a lease agreement and found the long-term problems with the building that force the search for a new home to resume. The KVML says the discovery led to "irreconcilable differences" with the building’s owner and the situation has moved to the courts.
"We had been advised that the building we leased on Mass Ave. had significant safety issues," said Julia Whitehead, chief executive officer of the KVML. "We were incredibly disappointed to learn that our ‘new home’ was uninhabitable. We believed that to move into a building that had safety issues would be irresponsible to our collection, our supporters, and our patrons. We are eager to go back to the drawing board to find a location that is suitable, accessible, and safe."
The KVML says its current location at 340 N. Senate Ave remains open to patrons. The museum says it will continue plans for its Night of Vonnegut Gala Saturday at the Athenaeum.
