The complex was deemed unsafe last year due to high levels of lead.
The IHCDA says once the residents of the complex have been relocated, the funding will be used for securing the site and demolition. The complex is included in one of three zones of the USS Lead Superfund site.
"Our primary concern is the health and well-being of the individuals and families living at the West Calumet Housing Complex," said Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch, who serves as board chair of IHCDA. "We will continue to identify and support further efforts related to the affected area in East Chicago in close collaboration with our local and federal partners."
Governor Eric Holcomb issued an executive order requesting the IHCDA secure the funding for the demolition of the complex. The order also requested the IHCDA develop a website for status updates and other important information to be posted, which can be viewed by clicking here.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced plans earlier this week to resume cleanup in the remaining two zones of the USS Lead Superfund site.
