The office of United States Attorney Josh Minkler says William Brown assisted in bilking the Internal Revenue Service out of more than $300,000.
Brown worked for Instant Tax Service in central Indiana and was convicted for his role in inflating business income or losses on at least 65 tax returns from 2010-2012.
Minkler says "filing fraudulent tax returns is stealing from the U.S. Treasury. My office will not look the other way when taxpaying citizens are victimized." Brown inflated income and losses of businesses to help set off earned income credits and refunds to customers.
Brown must also pay the full amount in restitution and be on home detention following the jail time as part of one year on supervised release.
