Construction is expected to begin this summer on the project that includes an event lawn capable of holding up to 1,500 people.
The new design was created by Indianapolis-based landscape architecture and urban design firm Rundell Ernstberger Associates. The updated plaza will also include an interactive water feature, a large shade structure with leisure swings and flexible seating areas.
The city says the redesign includes key elements from the original design and addresses current structural concerns.
"With the City County Building Plaza being in the heart of the growing Market East District, our goal was to design a space that tied into the mid-century modern structure, adjacent contemporary buildings, and the other civic spaces surrounding the Plaza," said Emily Mack, director of the DMD. “We worked to create a design all Indianapolis residents and visitors could imagine spending time in. We look forward to receiving public input and further refining the design."
Rundell Ernstberger Associates has been involved in the design of other downtown Indy projects, including the Indianapolis Cultural Trail and the recently-completed IndyGo Transit Center. Construction on the CCB Plaza redesign is expected to take one year to complete.
