The Million Dollar Donors Report 2016, released by Coutts & Co. with help from the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, looks at donations in the U.S., United Kingdom and Middle East.
The numbers show in Indiana last year, nonprofits received a total of 79 gifts of $1 million or more. Nearly half of which were from Indiana donors to Indiana recipients. She says Indiana higher education institutions were a prominent beneficiary, particularly the University of Notre Dame and IU, which received 13 and 9 major gifts, respectively.
Lilly Family School Professor of Economics and Director of Research Una Osili says "the significant growth in million-dollar-plus giving in the U.S. is good news. For the first time in eight years, we are seeing giving at this level rebound to where it was before the recession. Donors are increasing their support and dedication to the causes they care about."
The study shows in the U.S. in 2015, $1 million-plus contributions were on the rise from all types of donors: individuals, foundations and corporations. Last year, U.S. donors gave 1,823 such gifts, compared to 1,064 in 2014.
