10-Digit Dialing to Begin Saturday

As a subscriber you can listen to articles at work, in the car, or while you work out. Subscribe NowResidents in the 317 area code will be required to use 10 digits when making phone calls beginning Saturday. The change is being made so the new 463 area code can overlay the entire region beginning next month.
The Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor says projections show that numbers with the 317 area code will run out by the end of the year. The 317/463 overlay is being done to ensure the Indianapolis metropolitan area will have a continuing supply of numbers.
Officials are reminding residents that, when 10-digit dialing becomes mandatory, your telephone number will not change local calls will remain local. Residents can still use three digits to reach 911 and other three-digit numbers, such as 211, 411, 711 and 811. Also, consumers will still need to dial 1 when making long distance calls.
The OUCC reminds consumers to make sure all pre-programmed numbers for local calls are set to include the area code, including safety systems, alarm and security systems, speed dialers, fax machines and others.
