The $6.4 million facility will be built adjacent to Worthen Arena on the Muncie campus and will have practice space for the women’s and men’s basketball and volleyball teams.
Shondell founded Ball State’s men’s volleyball program in 1959 and retired in 1998. A member of the International Volleyball Hall of Fame, he took the team to 20 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association titles and 13 trips to the NCAA tournament.
"We are grateful for the support of the many alumni and friends who have made this facility a reality," said Mark Sandy, director of athletics. "And what better statement could be made about the value of athletics in providing our student-athletes opportunities for academic excellence, leadership and community engagement, than to name this facility for one of the finest individuals Ball State has known."
The Dr. Don Shondell Practice Center will also include a training room, study room and individual team meeting rooms. The facility is being funded by the Ball State University Cardinal Commitment campaign.
