Ball State University and Indiana State University are reporting near-record total enrollment for the 2016-2017 academic year. Ball State welcomed its third-largest student-body in 20 years, while ISU says overall enrollment is at its second-highest in history.

Ball State’s overall enrollment is at nearly 22,000 students. The university also recorded its third-highest freshman class in history with nearly 4,000 incoming students.

"We continue to recruit great students and excellent faculty and staff members, and we are in a good place," said Interim President Terry King. "And as our alumni recently reminded us, we have done, and we’ll continue to do, the important work of providing students a great foundation upon which they can build a happy, successful life."

Meanwhile, Indiana state is reporting more than 13,500 total students, including a 17 percent increase in online students from the previous year. The university says its number of new freshmen, nearly 2,500, is "reflective of an increased competition for a flat number of high school graduates in the state."

"I know I say this every year: It’s such an exciting time to be at State," said President Dan Bradley. "Enrollment is strong and more so this year features a stability reflective of a diverse mix of students – those transferring in from other schools, taking classes online, seeking advanced degrees and visiting from other states and countries."

Earlier this month, Earlham College, IPFW, Trine University, Butler University and Marian University all reported record numbers for freshman or total enrollment.
