Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report the projects add up to nearly $9 million.
The money will go toward bridge rehabilitation projects, which will cost $5.2 million, and three new track crossovers, which will cost $1.7 million. The publication says the crossovers will complement a planned double-tracking project between Gary and South Bend.
The crossovers will allow express trains and trains with fewer stops to pass those that stop at most or all stations, according to NICTD Planning and Marketing Director John Parsons. He tells The Times, "It’s a safety enhancement, but beyond safety it also lays the groundwork for when we implement double-tracking."
Parsons says the crossover work will create service delays during off-peak weekday hours and weekends. The work is expected to performed during the spring and early summer.
The Times says work on the bridge rehabilitation projects is also expected to begin in the spring and be completed by the end of November.
