Organizers say 32 teams will take part in the competition, requiring them to raise funds and build robots to perform assigned tasks.
The city hosted a district event this year. Indiana FIRST Executive Director Renee Becker-Blau says there was a "fantastic level" of community and volunteer support and student participation. She says timing, venue availability and location were also taken into account while selecting the competition site.
FIRST competitions involve teams of 25 or more students raising funds, designing a team "brand" and programming robots to perform tasks against a field of competitors. Organizers say the competition gives participating students "real-world engineering" experiences.
The Indiana FRC State Championship will be April 14 and 16 at Kokomo Schools Memorial Gymnasium and Indiana University Kokomo’s adjoining Cougar Gym. The event is being put on in partnership with Kokomo School Corp. and IU Kokomo.
IndianaFirst, or For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, has organized the state events since 2001.
