KOKOMO, Ind. – Today, St.Joseph Kokomo and St.Vincent officials announced that St.Joseph Kokomo has changed its name to St.Vincent Kokomo, effective immediately.
“Changing our hospital's name to St.Vincent Kokomo more clearly shows our affiliation with St.Vincent and our physicians within St.Vincent Medical Group,” said Margie Johnson, interim regional president for St.Vincent Kokomo. “However, our mission, heritage and commitment to those we serve in Kokomo and surrounding areas, especially to those who are poor and vulnerable, will remain unchanged.”
St.Vincent Kokomo, a member of Ascension, the nation's largest Catholic and not-for-profit health system, has served residents in Howard County and surrounding areas for more than a century. Founded in 1913 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Tipton, who in their desire to serve, responded to a request to start a hospital in Kokomo. The Sisters served all those in need, regardless of their religious beliefs or ability to pay.
In 1994, the Sisters of St. Joseph began looking for a partner and found in the Daughters of Charity someone with a similar mission. The alliance they formed is what is known today as St.Vincent.
Throughout the past 100 years, the faith-based hospital in Kokomo has grown the services offered to the community. In particular, patients can seek care for cancer, cardiovascular services, emergency care, home care, hospice, immediate care, maternity services, medical imaging, mental and behavioral health, outpatient services, rehabilitation services, respiratory care, women's health and wound treatment.
“We are grateful to the heritage the Sisters of St. Joseph have brought to St.Vincent Kokomo and the community,” said Jonathan Nalli, chief executive officer for St.Vincent. “To provide safe, high quality care, our ministries must have a strong regional presence, integrated physician relationships and capabilities across the healthcare continuum. St.Vincent Kokomo will remain dedicated to providing spiritually-centered, holistic care, that sustains and furthers both individual and community health.”
In recent years, the faith-based hospital has achieved recognition from the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and Modern Healthcare magazine as a “Best Place to Work.” In addition, St.Vincent Kokomo became the only hospital in Howard County to be accredited as both a Chest Pain Center and a Stroke Center of Excellence.
