Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report a company spokesman says there is only “one open item” remaining to be negotiated. More than 1,000 employees at the refinery joined the national strike in February. They are represented by United Steelworkers International. The stoppage revolves around what USW calls “unfair” labor practices by oil companies.
The paper reports USW Local 7-1 says it is fighting for a safer workplace, less overtime and a larger work force, in hopes of easing workloads.
BP also says a Whiting production unit that failed last month is close to restarting. That could put some downward pressure on gas prices throughout the Midwest.
