News Release

Greencastle, Ind. — Anita Sarkeesian, a feminist video game blogger and media critic, and Patrick Byrne, the founder and CEO of Overstock.com, will visit the DePauw University campus this week to speak at the Eighth Annual Undergraduate Ethics Symposium. Presented by DePauw's Prindle Institute for Ethics, the April 9-11 event will bring together more than 20 undergraduates from around the country to workshop papers and creative works that speak to issues of ethical concern.

Byrne will present a lecture, “Ethics, Entrepreneurship and Disruption,” at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 9. The leader of his company since 1999, Byrne has been named to BusinessWeek's list of the 25 most influential people in e-Business and won the first-ever Utah Best of State Awards for Community Development.

Sarkeesian, who has spoken out against violence being committed against female characters in video games via her “Tropes vs. Women in Games” video series, will discuss “Navigating the Gendered Minefield of Online Harassment” at 4:15 p.m., Friday, April 10.

The event will also include a 10 a.m. Saturday address, “Leaps and Bounds: Toward a Normative Theory of Inferential Privacy,” by Solon Barocas, postdoctoral research associate at the Center for Information Technology Policy at Princeton University.

All of the events take place at the auditorium within the Prindle Institute and are presented free of charge and are open to all. A shuttle bus will leave the Union Building ten minutes before each of the public talks.
