Bethel College in Mishawaka is adding to its education program. The school is offering a new minor and a graduate degree in special education.

March 11, 2015

News Release

MISHAWAKA, Ind. – Bethel College is expanding its education degree offerings with a new minor and a new graduate degree in special education. The minor is available now to undergraduate students and the master’s degree could begin as soon as this summer.

According to Program Director for Education Kristie Cerling, Ed.D., these programs will continue the history of excellence that has become a hallmark of Bethel’s Education graduates. Last year, the Indiana Department of Education published a report showing that more Bethel graduates are rated by school administrators as “highly effective teachers” in their first three years of teaching than any other college in Indiana.

Cerling says the programs also fill a vital need in Indiana and surrounding states. A review of the U.S. Department of Education Nationwide Teacher Shortage Listings, indicates that Special Education has been on the list every year for Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio as early as the first reporting in 1990.

“Teachers who graduate from these programs will be more desirable for employment because there is extremely high need for educators with this type of training,” says Cerling. “I especially encourage teachers to consider the master’s degree because it will provide them with new opportunities outside their initial licensure.”

High school students who are interested in learning more about Bethel’s education programs, including the new special education minor, can contact the Admissions Office at 574.807.7600 or Admissions@BethelCollege.edu. Adult students who are interested in the new master’s program can contact Sandra Lesko in the Adult and Graduate Studies Office at 574.807.7550 or LeskoS@BethelCollege.edu.
