Leaders from across the state are reacting to the death of former University of Notre Dame President Reverend Theodore Hesburgh. Governor Mike Pence says Hesburgh's legacy will continue to inspire people around the world.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Governor Mike Pence today issued the following statement upon learning of the passing of the Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, who served as the 15th President of the University of Notre Dame from 1952 to 1987.

“Indiana has lost a man of unwavering faith, profound vision and monumental virtue in the passing of Father Theodore Hesburgh. An advocate for human and civil rights, education opportunity, and diplomacy both here and abroad, Father Hesburgh’s accomplished life epitomized servant leadership and made a critical impact in advancing and bettering our world. His legacy will endure always and, without doubt, will continue to inspire individuals across the world to pursue a life of peace and justice. The First Lady and I extend our deepest condolences to his family, the University of Notre Dame community, and all who knew and loved this exceptional Hoosier leader.”

Washington, D.C. – Senator Dan Coats (R-Ind.) released the following statement regarding the passing of Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, President Emeritus of the University of Notre Dame:

“The Book of Proverbs tells us that ‘as iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.’ Father Hesburgh enriched innumerable lives with his visionary leadership and faithful service. He was a powerful voice on numerous important issues, including civil rights, higher education and faith. It was a pleasure to know and learn from Father Hesburgh. I join with the Notre Dame community in celebrating his incredible life.”

“What can anyone add to the decades of tributes that Father Hesburgh earned and so richly deserved? When inaugurating Indiana's Sachem Award to recognize lives of excellence and moral virtue, Father Hesburgh, along with Coach John Wooden, struck me as an obvious and iconic choice. We truly will not see his like in our lifetimes.”
