The chief executive officer of Indianapolis-based Rook Security Inc. says the recent Anthem Inc. (NYSE: ANTM) data breach involves more sensitive data than other high profile hacks. J.J. Thompson says the stolen information could allow “bad actors” to steal identities and lead to larger issues down the road for businesses, individuals and even national security. He does add that Anthem's response to the problem, particularly with the FBI, was swift. During an interview this weekend on Inside INdiana Business Television, Thompson said the stolen information could haunt victims “forever.” He says other recent notable hack such as Home Depot, Sony and Target involved information that is more easily replaceable.

The hack could affect as many as 80 million people.

Thompson says small and large businesses need to “put controls, technology and process in place to give themselves the visibility, intelligence and response capability they need to detect and respond to an attack.”

He urges consumers to freeze their credit report and after they use it, monitor the activities for the rest of their lives.

A data breach bill has been approved by an Indiana House committee. Thompson calls it a “fantastic piece of legislation” and says the proposal shows the state is bringing the issue of data security to “the front of the line.”
