STATEHOUSE – State Representative Greg Beumer (R-Modoc) has authored a bill which would allow the Department of Workforce Development (DWD) to provide further reemployment services and training for unemployed Hoosiers. The bill passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 77-17 and will now go to the Senate for further consideration and debate.
According to the DWD, after receiving unemployment benefits for four weeks, an individual is required to visit a WorkOne Office for various services, such as a review of their work search records and an orientation to WorkOne services. House Bill (HB) 1497 would allow the DWD to provide further reemployment assistance for certain individuals, including an additional job skills assessment.
“My intent in authoring this legislation was to provide a stepping stone towards getting more Hoosiers back to work and bridging the skills gap that has negatively impacted Indiana for several years,” said Rep. Beumer. “In my role as a legislator, I am committed to ensuring a brighter future for all Hoosiers, and I believe that one of the best ways we can do that is by matching their skills to those jobs that are currently in high-demand.”
HB 1497 also adds another opportunity for DWD to combat fraudulent claims.
