News Release

BEDFORD, Ind. – Shawna Girgis was first elected Mayor of Bedford, Indiana in January 2008 and is the first woman to serve in the office. Early this morning she filed the necessary documents to be a candidate in the 2015 Bedford mayoral election. One of the documents submitted today was a petition with the signatures of nearly 500 registered voters that live in Bedford city limits. Lawrence County Clerk, Myron Rainey, received the documents and is responsible for certifying the petition.

State election law allows independent candidates to run for office. This is done by obtaining signatures of registered voters on a petition. A task that Mayor Girgis completed in 2007, 2011, and again this year.

Mayor Girgis shared “I am so thankful to family, friends, and the many Bedford citizens that signed and carried the petition. Completing this task creates so much enthusiasm and encouragement from people. It is truly an exciting start to this election year.”

Mayor Girgis is the only independent mayor currently serving in the State of Indiana. While this may be uncommon, it is working in Bedford. Bedford was designated a 2013 Indiana Stellar Community and Indiana State Chamber Community of the Year. Bedford is experiencing growth in local industry that supports NSWC Crane and is home to a GM Plant that continues to expand and increase employment. The community experienced more than a 450 percent increase in the enrollment of 21st Century Scholars in 2014 that will help local students attend college and is the seat of Lawrence County, an Indiana Bicentennial Community, just to name a few of the latest achievements.

Mayor Girgis will not participate in the May primary election because she is not a member of a political party. The May election is held so political parties can select candidates. The citizens of Bedford will have the opportunity to vote for Mayor Girgis in the general election that will take place on November 3rd 2015.
