Purdue University has approved the factors to measure President Mitch Daniels' performance. The board will use the metrics to determine Daniels' bonus pay during the next academic year.

December 20, 2014

News Release

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's Board of Trustees on Saturday (Dec. 20) voted to adopt a series of metrics on which President Mitch Daniels' performance will be reviewed for 2014-15.

The metrics, in the broad categories of student success and institutional excellence, continue the effort to define and measure the university's progress in areas of importance to Purdue stakeholders, the board and the president.

“We will continue to refine the metrics that measure the things that matter,” said Michael Berghoff, chair of the board's Compensation Committee, which recommended the metrics for board approval. “For this year, we have included additional factors in student success and institutional excellence that we think will help keep accessibility, quality, affordability and value at the forefront as we all work to make a Purdue education impactful and transformative.”

Daniels' contract, when approved in December 2012, was a departure from more traditional pay structures for university presidents and put in place a system by which Daniels has a percentage of his salary set aside as “at-risk” funds. In November, the trustees Executive Committee approved awarding Daniels 88 percent of the available funds for his performance in 2013-14.

Metrics for the current fiscal year will assess progress in the areas of student debt, student success, fundraising, and institutional reputation and excellence. Some adjustments to targets and areas measured have been made and are included in the chart available online at http://news.uns.purdue.edu/images/+BOTrustees/daniels-metrics14.pdf.
