Construction is progressing as expected on the $48 million upgrade for Four Winds Field in downtown South Bend, home of the South Bend Cubs. A steel-topping ceremony was held Wednesday to celebrate the halfway mark of the multi-year project.
Plans for the project were first announced last April, and construction began in September.
For the first home game of the 2025 season on April 8 versus the Peoria Chiefs, the stadium will feature a new natural playing field, replacing the previous 10-year-old field. Fans can also expect upgraded seats and new menu items this year.
“This expansion project stands as a testament to the steadfast dedication of our community and the South Bend Cubs in revitalizing our city and bringing this world-class vision to life,” said Mayor James Mueller. “It’s an exciting time for South Bend and I am thrilled to see what this transformation project has in store for the growth of our city and the surrounding neighborhood.”
Funding for the project was made possible through a Professional Sports and Convention Development Agreement (PSCDA), an instrument created by state statute. Senator Ryan Mishler, Senator David Niezgodski, Representatives Jake Teshka and Maureen Bauer, were instrumental in passing the law that allows Hoosier cities collect needed improvement funds.
“This is an exciting day,” stated Andrew Berlin, owner of the South Bend Cubs. “As we approach the midpoint of the renovation here at Four Winds Field, I’m already imagining the memories that will be created for fans in this re-imagined stadium. And, I’m looking forward to the enhanced entertainment district here in downtown South Bend.”
Roger Bossard, head groundskeeper at Rate Field, home of the Chicago White Sox, installed the new playing surface. A new safety netting is expected to be in place by opening day for the 2025 season.
Following the end of the 2025 season, the second phase of construction will begin on a 4-story building that will consist of a new commercial kitchen, a rooftop bar, an event space and additional office spaces. The sound system in the stadium will also be replaced.
The new second deck will feature 12 luxury suites, with picnic areas on both ends. Pepsi Stadium club renovations are underway. The splash pad will also be relocated as part of the renovations and will be about 2.5 times the current size, while the fun zone will be moved to the location of the old splash pad.
At project completion in 2026, seating at the stadium is expected to exceed 10,000. The most-attended game of 2024 brought in more than 8,000 people.
