A food ingredients manufacturer headquartered in Westchester, Illinois is planning a major investment in its central Indiana operations.
Ingredion Inc. announced this month that it will invest more than $100 million to increase efficiency, modernize equipment and boost energy reliability at its manufacturing plant in Indianapolis.
“The Indianapolis plant is really a cornerstone of our manufacturing network,” said Rick Wion, communications director at Ingredion.
Wion told Inside INdiana Business that the investment supports the company’s Texture & Healthful Solutions business segment.
“These are specialty ingredients that help food improve their texture,” Wion said. “Think of the crispiness of a French fry or the creaminess of peanut butter or smoothness of yogurt—texturizing ingredients really play a big role in that, and a lot of food manufacturers are realizing that. Our business in this area has grown. We wanted to invest in this plant to be able to grow our ability to supply that demand.”
Ingredion plans to use the investment to not only modernize the existing equipment, but reconfigure the setup of the equipment lines in the facility, which will improve reliability, Wion said.
“This will allow our employees to just be more efficient in their day-to-day work,” he said. “When we say reliability, we mean reliability that our customers can depend on to be able to to know that we’re producing in a way that’s efficient, and we’re getting our our things on the truck or on the rail car and out to them.”
Ingredion also plans to install a new energy cogeneration system that will help heat the facility and provide electricity and steam for the plant. The company said the system will provide greater operational efficiency while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
“These investments are a win-win as it helps us modernize and improve our agility in delivering Texture & Healthful Solutions for our customers while also increasing our energy efficiency and improving our cost competitiveness,” Eric Seip, chief supply chain officer at Ingredion, said in written remarks.
The company currently has about 400 employees in Indianapolis and plans to add an undisclosed number of jobs with the new investment.
The project is expected to be complete in the second half of 2026. Wion said there is always room for further growth in Indianapolis as well.
“We have innovation centers around the world, and a lot of what we’re doing with those innovation centers will end up being products that we’re going to be producing out of Indianapolis,” he said. “As the market for texture solutions in those areas grows, and we see really strong growth in those in the past year and more in the future, we think that there’ll just be more opportunity for more products and and other things coming out the Indy plant.”
In addition to the plant at 1515 South Drover Street in Indianapolis, Ingredion also has a location in Lebanon.
