News Release

Indianapolis, Ind. — Preschoolers from Indianapolis are going for a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title on Oct. 30 to focus attention on the importance of vocabulary. These local children will be among 4,000 children in 37 plus cities across 15 states and Washington, D.C. participating in a simultaneous vocabulary lesson hosted by PNC in support of its Grow Up Great initiative.

Vocabulary is considered the building block of education and has become a focus within early learning. One of the first indicators of a child's future success is the number of words he or she hears prior to kindergarten. A landmark study found that an at-risk child hears 30 million fewer words by age 4 than a child from a more well-to-do household. PNC actively supports vocabulary development through Grow Up Great, which has introduced a number of initiatives that focus on its role in early childhood education.

What: The world's largest vocabulary lesson features words from and reading of Mr. Tiger Goes Wild, by Caldecott Honoree Peter Brown.

Who: Approximately 228 preschool children from Early Learning Indiana and their teachers will participate. Each child receives a copy of the book and “Words Are Here, There, and Everywhere,” a new multimedia educational kit created by Sesame Workshop for PNC as part of a continuing partnership.

When: Thursday, Oct. 30 from 10:30am – 11:00am. Guinness announcement at 12pm ET.

Where: The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, 3000 N. Meridian Street, 2nd floor

Why: PNC recognizes that learning in a child's early years is essential for their long-term success. Through Grow Up Great, a $350 million, multi-year, bilingual initiative that began in 2004, PNC helps prepare children from birth to age 5 for success in school and life. With a focus on underserved children, Grow Up Great provides the leadership, advocacy, funding, volunteers and educational resources to help families, educators and community partners provide innovative opportunities that enhance children’s learning and development.

About: The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is a non-profit institution committed to creating extraordinary learning experiences across the arts, sciences, and humanities that have the power to transform the lives of children and families.
