DELPHI, Ind. — A $1.4 million investment by Next Day Container Inc. to renovate and move to a Delphi, Ind., facility, add office space, acquire state-of-the-art equipment and increase employment was announced Tuesday, October 21.
Details were released at a news conference hosted by the Carroll County Economic Development Corp. at the Wabash and Erie Canal Conference Center in Delphi.
Founded in 2000, Next Day Container has outgrown its Logansport space and chosen a 32,000-square-foot facility on three acres in the Delphi Industrial Park, 1514 North West Washington St., Delphi, for its operations., company personnel announced. An additional 20,000 square feet is scheduled to be acquired in the park in the second quarter of 2015
“An industry that’s been growing steadily is getting ready to grow again and is also acquiring a pioneering new piece of equipment that is too large for its current site,” said Milt Rodgers, Carroll County Economic Development board president.
Ken Mushen, who co-owns Next Day Container with Steve Criswell and Mark Criswell, said the new Delphi site, formerly the home of Globe Valve, where plumbing fixtures were made from 1939 to 2003, has six loading bays, 35-foot eaves and a 16-foot overhead drive-in-door. “This fills our need for space and installation of our new, 155 ft-long wash plant,” Mushen said. “We could not have acquired this new equipment if we remained in our Logansport facility.”
The company plans to be operating at the Delphi facility by February 2015.
New jobs are also on the horizon, Mushen said. “We plan to add 10 new jobs to our current workforce. These will not be immediate—so we’re not taking applications yet. But we anticipate hiring by 2017.”
Deciding on a new location and launching aggressive growth plans called for a careful consideration of sites, communities and even states, Mushen said. “Where could we find the best return for our investment? A highway system to meet our needs? A workforce with commitment and loyalty? A community that embraces business? Our studies complete, all the factors weighed, we decided that Indiana, and this region of Indiana, is our best choice.”
The Delphi facility, he said, provides “good transportation and highway access, hardworking employees with Midwestern values, a pro-business climate and an available site.”
Next Day Container Office Manager Brandy Kizer explained the new washing equipment, now under production in Minneapolis. “It will arrive here in 6 semi loads, then be painted onsite by Snow White Services of Lafayette, Ind., then installed by the machine manufacturers during the fourth quarter of 2014 and first quarter of 2015,” she said.
“The equipment will stand two stories tall, extend about 30 feet across and span 155-feet in length—a pretty massive piece of equipment.”
Next Day Container’s is just the 13th installation of such equipment in the world, and only the third in North America. “It’s a fully self-contained system, with all the water used in the process captured and recycled, creating no wash water to be discharged into the environment,” Kizer said. “All the water will be collected and taken to incinerators in Indianapolis, where it will be used in energy generation.”
The highly automated wash plant has multiple quality assurance monitoring stations and is the most efficient, state-of-the-art system available, Kizer said. “We’re bringing it to Delphi, Ind., with great anticipation that it will help Next Day Container grow and expand.”
Criswell also spoke at the news conference, saying the company would add a separate office building, about 1,500 square feet, adjacent to the plant. “This will give us much-needed administrative and meeting space, separate from the plant operations.”
Next Day Container Inc. cleans, reconditions, remanufactures, sells and recycles intermediate bulk containers in two sizes: 275-gallon and 330-gallon, and provides the same services for 55-gallon drums,” Criswell said. “The containers are used to ship liquid products, such as perfume, oil, glue, and food products. Containers that cannot be restored are broken down and their components recycled.
“It’s a niche business, and a service that manufacturers depend on—for cleanliness, compliance and dependability,” he said. “We’ve been able to consistently deliver in each of these areas, earning a respected reputation. Now, this development will allow us to better meet the growing needs of our current and future customers.”
Delphi mayor Randy Strasser welcomed the business to town, hailing the return of a viable property to productive use. “We are going to see a model process for environmental stewardship in Next Day Container’s new processes that capture wash water and reuse it,” he said, “And we are about to reap the benefits of the Hoosier Heartland Highway and its improved transportation network.”
Laura Walls, executive director of the Carroll County Economic Development Corp., was unable to attend the news conference. She provided a welcoming comment: “When the news is that a business is taking a giant step forward, as Next Day Container is, many benefit.
“Indiana and our region reap tremendous rewards, because Next Day Container remains a Hoosier company and it brings an unused facility back into use. Current employees continue their careers, and, ultimately, new jobs will be added,” Walls said. “And Next Day Container is setting a new environmental standard with its equipment acquisition and cleaning process that represents a near-zero carbon footprint. This is a thumbs-up, most-welcome announcement today.”
