News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (September 30, 2014) – At today’s Cabinet meeting, Governor Mike Pence presented Sagamore of the Wabash awards to departing agency heads Anita Samuel, Director of the State Personnel Department, and Scott B. Sanders, Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Workforce. Both individuals will depart state government service mid-October.

“Anita Samuel has worked tirelessly to ensure top-notch services to employees of the State,” said Governor Pence. “Under her leadership, Indiana's State Personnel Department has taken innovative approaches to combine health and wellness efforts with human resources on a state level, including a fitness initiative and the State’s first onsite medical center for employees. Her vision and insights will be greatly missed. On behalf of my fellow State employees, I thank her for her dedication and wish her the best in her future endeavors.”

Upon leaving state government, Samuel will spend more time with family while pursuing opportunities in the private sector. Governor Pence named Samuel as Director of State Personnel in 2013. In 2011, she was named general counsel under Gov. Daniels after working as assistant general counsel and policy director for State Personnel since 2005.

“Throughout his time as Commissioner of the Department of Workforce Development, Scott B. Sanders has responsibly managed the State's training, employment programs and regional economic growth efforts,” said Pence. “His extensive background and expertise related to state workforce initiatives will serve him well in his new role, where he'll take on these matters on a national scale. I commend him for his service and extend best wishes for a successful future.”

Sanders will join the National Association of State Workforce Agencies as Executive Director in Washington, D.C. Prior to being appointed commissioner in early 2012, Sanders served within the DWD since 2006. He has also served Hoosiers as chief financial officer of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

On Monday, Governor Pence also presented departing State Health Commissioner Dr. Bill VanNess with a Sagamore of the Wabash Award.

About the Sagamore of the Wabash:

The Sagamore of the Wabash award is one of the most esteemed honors the Governor of Indiana can bestow. It is a personal tribute usually given to those who have rendered a distinguished service to the state or to the governor. Among these who have received Sagamores have been astronauts, presidents, ambassadors, artists, musicians, politicians, and ordinary citizens who have contributed greatly to our Hoosier heritage. The Sagamore of the Wabash award was created during the term of Governor Ralph Gates, who served from 1945 to 1949.
