The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded $2.7 million to Lawrence County and Virgil I. Grissom Municipal Airport. The money will help cover costs of repairs to the airport's main runway. September 19, 2014

News Release

WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly today applauded Lawrence County and Virgil I. Grissom Municipal Airport for receiving a $2,709,313 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Improvement Program to make necessary repairs to the airport’s main runway. Donnelly wrote a letter in support of the County’s grant application.

Donnelly said, “Lawrence County’s airport is a vital part of the area’s transportation infrastructure. This grant will allow the more than 55 businesses in the area, including GM Powertrain and businesses that support Crane Naval Base, to continue and expand their use of the airport. This is great news for Bedford and surrounding communities.”

Jamie Medlock, President of the Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce, said, “The Grissom Municipal Airport plays a critical role in Bedford’s success. We are beyond grateful to Senator Donnelly for sharing in our vision, and joining us as we work to advance our community and this region. Reliable and dependable airports are a key component for growth. Community leaders are appreciative of Senator Donnelly’s efforts, as well as the airport staff’s commitment to excellence.”

Grissom Municipal Airport provides service to not only Bedford and Lawrence County, but also to nearby destinations like French Lick, which will be hosting the Senior PGA Championship in May 2015. This grant will allow the main runway to be upgraded so it can safely support increased usage needed for travel and logistics created by this event, and local business growth as well.

In June, Donnelly sent a letter to FAA Program Manager Azra Hussain in support of Lawrence County’s effort to receive funding for this project.
