Purdue University will announce details Thursday of a competency-based degree program. The degree is part of the school’s redesign of the College of Technology into the Purdue Polytechnic Institute. September 3, 2014

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University officials on Thursday will hold a news conference to announce details of an innovative competency-based degree program and discuss the ongoing redesign of the College of Technology into the Purdue Polytechnic Institute.

Scheduled speakers at the news conference include Purdue President Mitch Daniels, College of Technology Dean Gary Bertoline, a student taking part in the new degree program, and an industry representative to discuss the new program’s workforce and economic development implications. The competency-based degree program proposal will receive financial support from the Purdue’s president’s office as the recipient of a university-wide challenge award instituted by Daniels.

The news conference will be followed by a tour of a student lab where journalists will be able to take photos and video of student activities related to the new program.

The Purdue Polytechnic Institute is part of the university’s Purdue Moves initiatives. Under the initiative, the Polytechnic Institute will be a hub for consumer-oriented research, offer students a curriculum focused on the science of demand-driven innovation and entrepreneurship. Students will learn from experts through industry-sponsored research projects, “study-away” experiences and internships.
