TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's student body is becoming more diverse and international, thanks to another record-setting recruitment year for incoming students.
Thirty-one percent of the 2014-15 freshman class is non-Caucasian and non-U.S. citizen, including a record 82 international students. Also, the 127 incoming female students is an all-time recruitment high – the second highest percentage of women in a freshman class.
Overall, the 582 freshmen arriving on campus on Friday, August 29, and Saturday, August 30, are the second largest incoming class in institute history.
“We achieved our freshman enrollment goal, and continued meeting our strategic objectives for increasing the ethnic, racial, and international diversity within the incoming class,” stated James A. Goecker, vice president for enrollment management and strategic communications.
“The outstanding student body of Rose-Hulman is reflecting the characteristics of a world-class institution, full of bright young men and women from across the nation and the globe. What an exciting environment this is!”
Other highlights of the 2014-15 incoming class include:
-One in 11 freshman students had a perfect math score on either SAT or ACT test.
-Twenty-one percent of the 325 incoming students come from schools that offer class ranks, were first, second, or third in their high school graduating classes.
-Freshmen are attending Rose-Hulman from 37 states and seven countries.
-Nine states are represented by 10 or more students, with a record 19 from Texas and a near-record 94 students from Illinois. The percentage of Indiana students in the class is one of the lowest ever, 31 percent.
-International freshmen come from China, India, Bolivia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Taiwan.
-In addition to the freshman class, 18 Brazilian students will be attending classes at Rose-Hulman for one year through the South American country's Science Without Borders program. Also, 12 students from China, Germany, Sweden, and France will also be attending for one or two academic quarters as exchange students.
-A total of 47 students are members of Rose-Hulman's new living and learning community that will prepare students with a business awareness to become technical leaders in today's competitive global economy – whether in a new venture or an established organization in Indiana. The ESCALATE program is part of a $1 million Lilly Endowment Inc. grant to encourage an entrepreneurial mindset among today's engineering students.
Rose-Hulman President Jim Conwell will welcome the freshmen and their families on Saturday, August 30. Then, the students will begin five days of New Student Orientation activities, before the 2014-15 academic year begins on Thursday, September 4.
