Organizers of the 2014 IndyFringe Festival expect this year's event to be the largest in the Indianapolis arts festival's 10-year history. Executive Director Pauline Moffat estimates about 20,000 people will attend the 11-day event beginning Thursday. She says the festival has grown every year since its debut in 2005. This year's version includes 64 groups and a total of 384 performances.

Moffat says IndyFringe is an illustration of Indianapolis' “fantastically healthy” arts scene.

The 2014 IndyFringe Festival runs August 14-24 in various venues in downtown Indianapolis' Massachusetts Avenue neighborhood. The shows run 45-60 minutes.

Moffat says the event provides opportunities and exposure for emerging and established artists. IndyFringe says it returned a record $122,000 in ticket revenue last year to performers.

The idea of IndyFringe dates back to 2001 when the city was working on a tourism initiative which included a group looking at what theater in the city might look like in 10 years. The Central Indiana Community Foundation provided seed money for research and travel for the project, which ultimately led to the development of IndyFringe.
