Students to Weigh in on South Bend Development

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (July 25, 2014) – Indiana University graduate students will present ideas for two proposed South Bend developments at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 28 at the Colfax Auditorium, 304 S. Main Street. The students will discuss the Westside Greenway, a proposal to turn two miles of former rail lines into a shared-use trail, and for the South Hub, a student-conceived mixed-use development from south of Wayne Street to Four Winds Field. The event is free and open to the public.
The proposals were developed as part of an online course with students from across the country taught by Prof. Frank Nierzwicki in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs in Bloomington. “The student presentation should be seen as an opportunity for South Bend to look at the future development of the city,” Prof. Nierzwicki says. “South Bend is on the verge of redeveloping, redefining, and enhancing itself to be a true 'model city' of the 21st century. We see our work as continuing the city's rebirth and encouraging further community enhancement and commitment.”
South Bend was chosen for the student proposals because of the potential uses for its former rail lines that connected the University of Notre Dame campus with downtown, and because of projected residential growth. A recent housing study found that downtown South Bend could absorb 500 new units over the next five years.
“These ideas will help inform our ongoing efforts to create vibrant, safe and healthy neighborhoods,” says Scott Ford, Executive Director, Community Investment. “Insights from the Indiana University students will be a welcome contribution to the goal of incorporating innovative best practices in our efforts to strengthen South Bend.”
