The project, which would have been built on agricultural land near I-69 and State Road 57, has received major opposition from residents.
Steve Bohleber, an attorney for neighboring resident Mary Joyce Willis, previously told Inside INdiana Business that the location in question wasn’t the right fit for a project of such scope.
“It’s farmland, it’s residences. Maybe it’s a nature preserve in the making. It’s just not a place that these neighbors want to see a 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week, 365-days-a-year busy truck stop,” he said.
The land, which encompasses more than 30 acres, is currently owned by the Indiana University Foundation. It’s located about 20 miles north of Evansville.
Many residents cited concerns about the impact on traffic in the area, as well as noise and light pollution. A petition on change.org received over 900 signatures.
Caitlin Jensen, Love’s corporate communications manager, said before the vote that if the rezoning petition was denied, the company will consider the feedback and decide next steps.
