The Joyce Ivy Foundation says the move comes after an Arizona State University professor gave the organization an endowment.
Indiana becomes the eighth state to establish a program from the foundation, which will be named the Steve Carlson Perseverance Scholar. Jennifer Carlson, a 2022 MacArthur Fellow, donated the funding in honor of her late father.
The scholarship’s inaugural award will be given in the summer of 2024 to a student from Muncie’s Indiana Academy, which is Carlson’s alma mater. The foundation said it hopes to expand offerings to around 20 students annually.
“This endowment not only allows us to set foot in Indiana but assures perpetual support for at least one scholar in the state,” Brittany Knight, executive director of Joyce Ivy Foundation and sister to Carlson, said in a news release. “We are keen on showcasing our year-on-year impact to the beautiful people of Indiana, expanding our reach and amplifying our profile.”
The Joyce Ivy Foundation was created to encourage and provide assistance so women can attend selective universities.
Since its founding in 2006, over 1,100 students have been named Joyce Ivy Scholars from Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio and South Dakota. The foundation said 30% of those students are first generation, 70% are women of color and most come from economically challenged families.
