Verizon Wireless has upgraded its wireless network. The company says it has activated “XLTE” technology in the Fort Wayne and Indianapolis markets.

June 26, 2014

News Release

Fort Wayne, Ind. — Verizon Wireless has expanded its newest XLTE technology today in Fort Wayne, boosting 4G LTE network capacity and enhancing high-speed services for consumers. More than half of Verizon’s 4G LTE 500-plus markets nationwide have been enhanced with XLTE, with more scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

“Verizon has a clear competitive advantage with XLTE and expects to stay well ahead of demand to deliver these 4G LTE services better, faster and to even more customers in Fort Wayne,” said John Granby, president of Verizon Wireless for Indiana, Michigan, and Kentucky.

XLTE technology is particularly effective in enhancing wireless network performance in settings with a concentrated group of high-data demand customers, such as densely-populated areas, rush hours, concert venues, sports arenas/stadiums and other large event locations, such as the upcoming Three Rivers Festival in Fort Wayne this July.

Other Indiana markets with the added capacity of XLTE include: Anderson, Bedford, Bloomington, Columbus, Elkhart, Evansville, Indianapolis, Kokomo, Lafayette, Logansport, Marion, Mishawaka, Richmond, South Bend, Terre Haute, Vincennes and Washington.

XLTE utilizes Verizon’s AWS (Advanced Wireless Services) spectrum, which allows Verizon to deliver significantly increased capacity — at a minimum, doubling the capacity — over its high-speed 4G LTE network. This means more customers in high-traffic locations can access the company’s most advanced technology at the same time to send photos, download videos, surf the Internet and use other popular applications on their smartphones, tablets and other devices during times of peak usage.

First launched in late 2010, the Verizon 4G LTE network build is virtually complete in Indiana and the nation, covering more than 500 markets nationwide and nearly 97 percent of the U.S. population. Verizon’s XLTE deployment is a major part of the company’s ongoing commitment to enhance network reliability and superiority.

Fort Wayne is also home to one of only two smart stores now open in Indiana so consumers can sample the latest business and lifestyle devices and wireless accessories that are compatible with the upgraded network. The Verizon Wireless Smart Store in Fort Wayne is located at 4602 Illinois Road. Verizon Wireless plans to convert all of its 1,700 company-owned retail locations into Smart Stores during the next few years.

The company has invested more than $1.5 billion since 2000 to build and enhance its Indiana wireless network, and consistently earns top rankings from independent consumer reporting and testing institutions for network quality and performance.

Verizon Wireless also scored best in Overall Performance in Fort Wayne this month in independent tests completed by *RootMetrics, which tested the top four wireless providers. RootMetrics is an independent mobile analytics firm and designs its studies to characterize a consumer’s mobile network experience.
