Terre Haute, Ind. — Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is once again top of the class in collegiate human-powered vehicle challenges (HPVC), with students capturing top honors for their innovative design and racing skills in this year's east- and west-coast regional competitions.
The HPV team took first place overall honors at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers' west regional, April 25-27 in San Jose, California, after placing second at the east event, April 11-13 in Orlando.
Rose-Hulman has now won 11 of the past 14 regional competitions.
The HPVC program provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate the application of sound engineering design principles in the development of sustainable and practical transportation alternatives. Students work in teams to design and build efficient, engineered vehicles for everyday use—from commuting to work, to carrying goods to market.
Rose-Hulman's team worked in the Branam Innovation Center throughout the 2013-14 academic year to design, construct and race a three-wheeled vehicle for speed and endurance. A design report and presentation are also part of the competition.
At the west regional, Rose-Hulman took first-place honors in the innovation, design and endurance events to earn overall top honors among 26 teams from 12 states, Mexico, Canada and India.
Two weeks earlier at the east regional, the team won the design category, placed second in innovation, was fifth in the men's speed race and was eighth in the endurance race. That put Rose-Hulman in second place overall, behind the host University of Central Florida in a competitive 36-team field.
The HPV team is part of Rose-Hulman's advanced transportation systems program, which strives to lead the development of the next generation of innovative automotive engineers.
