As Indiana's governor prepares to sign a set of education bills into law this afternoon, Chalkbeat Indiana Bureau Chief Scott Elliott says Mike Pence “has to be pretty happy” with how his education proposals fared this session. Elliott specifically cites a preschool pilot program providing grants of up to $6,800 for thousands of eligible students in five counties. Pence has already signed a measure requiring Indiana to adopt its own academic standards. The bills being signed today mostly involve adult education and technical training programs. Elliott discussed Pence's agenda during the (i) on Education segment on Inside INdiana Business Television. Governor Pence is set to sign four bills at this afternoon's Indiana Career Council meeting:

HEA 1028: Repeals a provision prohibiting the establishment of new adult high schools, sets standards and requirements

HEA 1064: Requires a study of career and technical education programs' return on investment

HEA 1213: Establishes a committee to review and make recommendations on Core 40 requirements and make recommendations about career and technical education offerings

SEA 330: Provides for grants for part-time adult students, establishes partial loan repayment for STEM teachers with top grades, sets some standards for dual-credit courses

Indianapolis, Ind. — Governor Mike Pence today signed Senate Enrolled Act 91, which requires Indiana to adopt its own academic standards. The Governor issued the following statement:

“I believe our students are best served when decisions about education are made at the state and local level. By signing this legislation, Indiana has taken an important step forward in developing academic standards that are written by Hoosiers, for Hoosiers, and are uncommonly high, and I commend members of the General Assembly for their support.

“As the task of writing our new academic standards continues, I am grateful to the more than 100 Indiana educators who have put thousands of hours into a comprehensive, transparent, and rigorous process of academic review and am confident that our state will produce Indiana standards that will prepare our students for success in college, careers, and life.”
