The Indiana Department of Labor says it has already taken corrective action on most of the recommendations in an Occupational Safety and Health Administration report. Among the issues in the report were a backlog of nearly 100 unprocessed complaints and lack of training for investigative staff. The department adds the recommendations from the April 2013 investigation applied to administrative procedures, and says they did not affect the health and safety of Indiana workers.

The Department of Labor welcomed receiving the February 2014 OSHA report of findings from the April 2013 investigation. It should be noted, however, that all recommendations outlined in the report apply to administrative procedures, and they have no effect on the health and safety of Hoosiers.

Throughout the CASPA investigation in April, 2013, IOSHA and Indiana Department of Labor personnel were completely open and cooperative, and most of the problems discovered already had been identified internally and were being addressed.

In the ten months since the actual investigation, IOSHA has completed action on all but two of the 22 recommendations in the report, and those are nearing completion.

It is also important to note that this report reflects a two year period where Indiana workplace fatalities and accident and injury rates have been at historic lows – the two safest years in Indiana workplace history.
