The former site of a Colgate plant and state prison in Clark County is being nominated for the National Register of Historic Places. The Courier-Journal reports the designation would help meet federal preservation requirements as part of the Ohio River Bridges Project. The site must be reviewed by a state officer and review board before the National Park Service would consider the nomination. A final decision may still be a year away.

Boston Redevelopment Group LLC purchased the Clarksville plant in 2011. At the time, the company said it wanted to create jobs through foreign investment.

Colgate bought the 52-acre site in 1921, employing as many as 1,500 workers in the 1960s. The plant made toothpaste, shaving cream and other products.
