The Muncie Community School Corp. Board of School Trustees has approved a plan to consolidate Southside and Central high schools. Our partners at WTHR in Indianapolis report the vote means Southside will become a middle school next academic year. The move was prompted by decreasing enrollment and shrinking budgets.

A $3 million referendum that would have funded bus service was voted down earlier this month. Officials have said busing would end if the measure was not passed.

Students currently attending both schools will go to Muncie Central in 2014-2015.

Bev Kelly, the only board member to vote no, said the consolidation is a “mistake” and she will spend today in sorrow.
