The city council in West Lafayette could vote Monday on a plan to pay for its portion of a passenger train line to Chicago running. The city could kick in about $200,000 per year for the Hoosier State Line. WLFI-TV in West Lafayette reports Mayor John Dennis says the route is essential for many in the Tippecanoe County city. The Indiana Department of Transportation, the county, Indianapolis, Crawfordsville, Rensselaer, Lafayette and Beech Grove have all agreed to cover the line for one year, with an option to extend the funding for four months.

$3 million in federal dollars were cut, leaving the Indianapolis-to-Chicago route in jeopardy of ending earlier this month.

Mayor Dennis tells WLFI around 60 area passengers use the line every trip. The train runs four times per week.
