Donation Kick-Starts Herron High School Campaign

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Herron High School has received a major gift commitment from Steve and Livia Russell toward its $5.3 million capital campaign. The announcement was made at a reception Saturday honoring the couple's commitment and taking the campaign public.
The school's “Rebuilding the Past for the Future” capital campaign is in support of renovation and restoration plans for the school, located at 110 East 16th Street. Funds go toward renovation and restoration of the Main building and the Fesler building. The buildings were once the John Herron Art Institute and the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
Steve Russell is founder and chairman of the board of Celadon and his wife, Livia Russell, is a retired realtor and floral designer. Both are active supporters of many cultural organizations in the city and serve as leaders on several boards. They both have joined Herron High School's Board of Directors.
As a tuition-free Indiana public, charter school, Herron High School does not receive equitable funding when compared to the traditional public schools. For example, Herron High School does not receive technology or transportation funding and very little financial support for facilities.
Herron High School is not affiliated with the Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI.
The school is founded on the belief that a classical, liberal arts education, where students are steeped in great historical thought and invention is the best preparation for a future life of leadership and service.
Exceptionally high demand for a Herron High School education has outstripped the capacity of the physical facilities. The school has an enrollment of nearly 700 students. School officials say close to 100 percent of Herron High School students graduate and a high percentage have been accepted into colleges since the school’s founding.
“Herron High School is achieving remarkable results and receiving state and national accolades. More importantly, the school is transforming students’ lives as well as adding renewed life to downtown Indianapolis,” said Joanna Taft, founder of the school and president of the school's Board of Directors.

Herron High School was founded in 2005 and open to all students. Designated a 4 Star School by the IDOE, Herron High School is dedicated to providing a classical, liberal arts education for students in grades 9 through 12. This approach aids students in assimilating knowledge by connecting logical relationships between subjects.
