Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College near Terre Haute is planning to break ground on a sports and recreation center in December, even though a fundraising campaign for the effort has not reached its goal. The school needs another $1.3 million to hit the $11 million target. October 22, 2013

News Release

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College announced that it will break ground on its new sports and recreation center in December 2013. The College has secured the funding to move forward on breaking ground and bring this campaign and building to fruition.

“This is a proud moment for The Woods made possible through the passion, loyalty and vision of our partners, alums and friends,” said Dottie King, Ph.D., president of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. “I am honored and humbled by the generosity that the donors have shown.”

The campaign has not officially concluded. The opportunity remains for friends, alums, faculty and staff to share in the campaign’s success by adding to this historic time in the life of the College. The College’s advancement team will continue to work to close the Pomeroy Pride campaign, as another $1.3 million is needed to meet the goal of $11 million.

King explained that the successful conclusion to this campaign matters the most to the students. “They will have a place for their home basketball games where the entire campus can cheer them on which is nothing less than what other colleges and universities offer. And the non-athletes will have a place for intramurals and a place to workout in the fitness center.”

It is estimated that 45,000 square foot facility will be completed in 10 months. The building site will be located at the west edge of campus, behind the Mary and Andy Rooney Library.

Facility details:

• NCAA regulation-sized gym seating approximately 1,000 spectators

• Practice gym for auxiliary revenue and intramural sports

• 2,000 sq. ft. lobby – flexible space for functions and activities

• Locker rooms, a training room, a fitness room and ample storage space

• Offices for a growing athletic program

• Silver LEED environmental certificationSource: Saint Mary-of-the-Woods CollegeNews Release

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College today launched its new brand initiative focused on advancing the image and reputation of the College. The brand will launch with the important strategic goals of enhancing student recruitment, fundraising and overall brand awareness.

The initiative, Aspire Higher, is a clear and distinctive message that’s congruent with the College’s mission and values but is also reflective of its advances and vision. The initiative speaks to every aspect of the College – academics, campus life, athletics, community and faith. Whether traditional, online or graduate, all students seek to direct their passion, attain goals, improve their lives, stretch themselves beyond what they had imagined – to Aspire Higher.

“I am excited about the Aspire Higher campaign,” said Dottie King, Ph.D., president of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. “It positions us as an engaging, inspiring and bold institution. It also builds a broad understanding of and support for The Woods in the community and the state.”

For 173 years, the College has delivered a unique and powerful brand experience than melds intellect and spirituality. The effort is aimed at expanding awareness and understanding of this experience.

“The brand initiative is set to elevate the perception of The Woods and communicate its relevance in an extremely competitive higher education marketplace,” said Dee Reed, SMWC’s executive director of college relations. “We believe Aspire Higher will create a new attitude and energy in how we express who we are,” Reed added.

The campaign will include a series of engaging television and radio spots, print and online ads, social media and billboards around Terre Haute.Source: Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College
