Bosma employee wins national award

Emily Kanis has been awarded the 2021 Peter J. Salmon Employee of the Year Award from the National Industries for the Blind, an affiliate of Bosma.
“I’ve been with Bosma for 15 years, and I was surprised to earn such an important award for my work,” Kanis said. “I am so thankful for the support of my co-workers and supervisors that enabled me to be selected.
The award honors employees who excel in their roles at organizations associated with the National Industries for the Blind. The Employee of the Year Award is named after the late Dr. Peter J. Salmon, who played a key role in passing the Wagner-O’Day Act and creating NIB.
Kanis joined Bosma after graduating from the Indiana School for the Blind. She began packing gloves, taping boxes and loading pallets. Today, she conducts quality control on the assembly line and works at The Bistro, Bosma’s breakfast and lunch café for employees.
“Emily has proven for years that she is versatile and essential,” said Jeffrey Mittman, Bosma president and CEO. “She takes pride in her work and is extremely dedicated to our organization and mission. Her can-do attitude and drive are contagious.”
In addition to her jobs at Bosma, Kanis takes part in the Bosma Toastmasters Club to pursue her goal of learning to speak more confidently to audiences. Since becoming involved with the group, she has presented lunch and learn sessions on healthy eating and spoke at Bosma’s fundraising events.
