SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Mayor Pete Buttigieg will hold a press event at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 24 at the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown South Bend to discuss GreenTown Michiana. A conference designed to create a healthy, sustainable community, GreenTown Michiana will be held at the DoubleTree on October 10 and 11.
Expected to attract hundreds of people from around the Midwest, the conference is intended to help residents “make the healthy choice the easy choice,” says co-organizer Gary Cuneen, executive director of the non-profit Seven Generations Ahead, who will also participate in Wednesday's press event. “In addition to connecting the dots between government and the private sector, GreenTown fosters community sustainability planning and implementation.”
The keynote speakers for the October conference will be George Hartwell, mayor of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Mark Fenton, host of “America's Walking” on PBS. Fenton will also lead a walking tour of downtown South Bend, discussing how the community can take advantage of its green assets.
Topics to be discussed at GreenTown Michiana include Health and Wellness Sustainability, Energy and the Built Environment, Transportation, Sustainable Business, Food and Waste, and Water.
