Subscribe NowSome members of the Indiana Congressional delegation are weighing in on Thursday's narrow passage of a retooled farm bill in the U.S. House of Representatives. The legislation left out funding for food stamps. Congressman Marlin Stutzman (R-3), who supported the bill, called it a “landmark reform.” Congressman Andre Carson (D-7), who voted with all Democrats against it, said if enacted, the law would “have devastating consequences.” Representatives Susan Brooks (R-5), Larry Bucshon (R-8), Luke Messer (R-6), Todd Rokita (R-4), Marlin Stutzman (R-3), Jackie Walorski (R-2) and Todd Young (R-9) all voted in favor of the measure.

For decades, the farm bill has been a comprehensive measure that brought together the interests of farmers with those they feed. Today, that tradition was gutted, and families will go hungry as a result. Every reputable local and national organization that feeds children says not funding nutrition assistance will But nearly every Republican in the House still voted to exclude it today, and the House Republican Leadership has no plan to bring it up separately. Today, politics was put above the very people counting on us to get it right. I hope the Senate can fix this in conference.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Marlin Stutzman issued the following statement today after the House of Representatives passed the first, farm-only Farm Bill in more than forty years:
“Transparent government won an important victory today. Conservatives seized an opportunity to split the Farm Bill, a landmark reform that breaks the unholy alliance between food stamps and agriculture policy. For the first time since the 1970's taxpayers will have an honest look at how Washington spends their money on agriculture and food stamp policy.
“As a fourth-generation farmer, I am proud of my work to pass the first true, farm-only farm bill in more than four decades. This is just the first of many reforms and I look forward to working with my colleagues to continue reducing the size of a government that has driven taxpayers nearly $17 trillion in debt.”
